TPC Benchmark Status
April 2007

Overview

The TPC held a General Council meeting on February 8th in Colorado Springs, CO. The TPC-E benchmark was approved in a Mail Ballot. With respect to decision support, the current revision of the TPC-DS benchmark was accepted for formal review.

Current Benchmarks

TPC-C, TPC-H, TPC-App

The Maintenance Subcommittees for TPC-C, TPC-H, and TPC-App did not convene at this meeting. The subcommittees will continue to monitor the benchmarks, along with any TAB interpretations and rulings, for discussion and possible inclusion in future versions of the specifications.

New Benchmarks

TPC-E

The TPC adopted TPC-E Benchmark Specification Version 1.0 in a Mail Ballot.

The TPC-E benchmark simulates the OLTP workload of a brokerage firm. The focus of the benchmark is the central database that executes transactions related to the firm’s customer accounts. Although the underlying business model of TPC-E is a brokerage firm, the database schema, data population, transactions, and implementation rules have been designed to be broadly representative of modern OLTP systems.

TPC-DS

The TPC accepted Draft Version 52 of the TPC-DS specification for Formal Review.  Members and the general public are invited to download the specification, run the draft benchmark, and submit comments and proposed changes by visiting the comment page. The comment database is open for submissions until May 23rd, 2007 at 11:59pm Pacific Time. The subcommittee will review and address all comments and propose a revised draft for adoption.

At the meeting the TPC-DS subcommittee focused on prototyping and verifying the Data Maintenance portion of the benchmark, analyzing prototype data, reviewing the specification and verifying qualification query output.  Seven companies have working prototypes with scale factors ranging from 1 GB to 1 TB on four hardware platforms, five operating systems and four databases.

Other TPC Activities

Pricing Specification

The Pricing Maintenance Subcommittee has produced a minor specification revision that eliminates month-to-month availability inconsistencies by changing the 6-month availability rule to 185 days and that improves the rules for substitution of benchmark components in the priced configuration.

Version 1.2.0 of the specification is available immediately and is effective on April 9, 2007. All results published under prior pricing rules are comparable with those published under the new version.

Public Relations Committee

The TPC has conducted a press- and analyst tour in March to announce the adoption of TPC-E.

The TPC will be presenting at a number of industry conferences over the next 12 months. The TPC welcomes opportunities to present the benefits and status of TPC benchmarks. If you are interested in inviting someone from the TPC for a presentation, please contact Michael Majdalany (majdalany @ tpc.org)
